Ulyanovsk man faces trial over 14 million ruble extortion

A resident of Ulyanovsk seeking thief in law status faces trial for extorting 14 million rubles from a businessman, Russian police reported. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia stated that the suspect positioned himself as an influential criminal figure planning to gain thief in law status.

In 2025, the accused offered criminal protection to a commercial businessman for 125,000 rubles per month. The businessman took the accompanying threats seriously and began paying for protection. To satisfy the demands, the victim sold a private house and gave his Lexus car to his protector. Between November 2025 and May 2026, the extortion caused 14 million rubles in total damage.

Police fully compensated the victim for his losses and recovered the Lexus in Krasnodar Krai to return it to him. The accused remains in custody while awaiting trial.
