Tropical storm warnings were issued along the Gulf Coast on Monday after Tropical Depression Five formed in the northern Gulf of Mexico, threatening Texas and Louisiana with heavy rainfall, coastal flooding, and strong winds ahead of a Tuesday landfall.
The National Hurricane Center forecast that the compact depression, which was carrying sustained winds of 35 mph, could strengthen into Tropical Storm Edouard as early as Monday night. Communities along the upper Texas and southwestern Louisiana coasts were left with barely a day to prepare before weather conditions deteriorate.
At 1pm CDT on Monday, the center of the depression was located about 120 miles south-southeast of Morgan City, Louisiana, and 230 miles southeast of Port Arthur, Texas. The system was creeping west-northwest at 5 mph.
Storm Track and Warning Zones
The official tropical storm warning extends from Port Bolivar, Texas, to the Vermilion-Cameron Parish line in southwestern Louisiana. A tropical storm warning indicates that sustained winds of at least 39 mph are expected somewhere within the designated area within 24 to 36 hours.
Port Bolivar sits on the Bolivar Peninsula at the entrance to Galveston Bay in Texas, while the Vermilion-Cameron Parish line marks a marshy stretch of the Gulf Coast in rural southwestern Louisiana. Both areas feature low-lying coastal terrain vulnerable to rising sea levels.
Meteorologists warned that tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the coastline by Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center cautioned that the arriving winds will make any last-minute outdoor preparations difficult or dangerous.

Although official forecasts keep the storm below hurricane intensity, meteorologist Dylan Federico noted on X that "a hurricane can't be ruled out." He advised that residents should prepare for tropical storm force winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding, adding that "this is a tiny storm so impacts will only be felt close to the center."
Hurricane Hunter Aircraft Findings
The system was officially classified after Air Force Hurricane Hunters flew an investigation mission into the disturbance on Monday. The crew discovered a closed atmospheric circulation in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
The Air Force Hurricane Hunters, part of the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, fly specialized aircraft directly into tropical weather systems to gather real-time data on wind speeds and atmospheric pressure for forecasters.
Flight data recorded maximum sustained winds of 35 mph alongside stronger gusts. Aircraft measurements estimated the storm's minimum central pressure at 1,012 millibars.
Standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is approximately 1,013 millibars. The measurement of 1,012 millibars indicated that the depression remained relatively weak for now, though a significant drop in central pressure would signal rapid strengthening.
Under international meteorological standards, a system is classified as a tropical depression when sustained winds remain below 39 mph. The depression needs to gain just 4 mph in wind speed to be named Tropical Storm Edouard.

Rainfall and Flash Flood Hazards
Forecasters expect the depression to maintain its general west-northwest motion over the next day or two, guiding its center toward the upper Texas or southwestern Louisiana shoreline. Because the storm is very compact, minor track shifts will determine which local communities face the strongest winds, heaviest rain, and deepest coastal flooding.
Unlike sprawling hurricane systems that affect broad geographic regions, compact tropical cyclones concentrate their serious effects near their center. While this limits the overall damage footprint, it leaves areas directly in the storm's path with very little time to respond after warnings are issued.
Heavy rainfall represents the widest-reaching danger associated with the approaching system. The depression could dump three to six inches of rain across the upper Texas coast and farther inland through east-central Texas, with isolated totals reaching nine inches.
Southwestern Louisiana is forecast to receive between two and three inches of rain, though totals could vary significantly depending on the storm's final path and where its strongest rain bands develop. The National Hurricane Center warned that intense downpours could trigger flash flooding in urban communities and low-lying areas where water can rise quickly.
Storm Surge and Preparation Advice
Coastal communities also face the threat of storm surge, which occurs when strong tropical winds push ocean water onto land above typical tide levels. Water could rise one to three feet above ground between High Island, Texas, and the Vermilion-Iberia Parish line in Louisiana if peak surge arrives near high tide.
High Island is located along Galveston County's coastline in Texas, while Iberia Parish lies further east along Louisiana's Gulf Coast. The deepest coastal flooding is expected along the immediate shoreline near and to the east of the storm center, though water levels could change sharply over short distances.
The National Hurricane Center, based in Miami, Florida, coordinates with local National Weather Service offices to issue advisories as conditions evolve. Officials urged coastal residents to monitor local weather updates closely because the track, rainfall forecast, and warning boundaries could still change before landfall.
People in the projected path were advised to finish securing outdoor items and gathering essential supplies before tropical-storm-force winds arrive on Tuesday. Those living in flood-prone areas were urged to be ready to move to safer ground if local authorities issue further instructions, though forecasters emphasized that no major hurricane strike is currently forecast and the system is not expected to become a monster.
