Steam Reveals Most Popular Gaming PC Setup for 2026

Steam has published its hardware and software survey for July 2026, offering a snapshot of the computers most gamers around the world use to play. The data is collected automatically from users' PC configurations through the Steam client.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 3060 remains the most popular graphics card among Steam users, installed in 3.88% of systems. It is followed by the laptop version of the RTX 4060 at 3.64% and the desktop RTX 4060 at 3.63%. The RTX 5070 and RTX 3050 round out the top five, with shares of 3.62% and 3.22% respectively.

The survey also shows a shift in video memory standards. For the first time, 16GB of VRAM has taken the top spot with a 25.9% share, overtaking 8GB, which had long been the leader and now sits at 25.3%. Cards with 12GB of VRAM hold third place with 12.8%.

Processors and operating systems

Among processors, 8-core chips are gaining ground, now found in 27.74% of PCs, though 6-core chips remain the most common overall at 28.43%. Chips with two or four cores each hold a share below 15%. Intel's overall share among Steam users, now at 54.65%, continues to decline gradually, while AMD's Ryzen chips are becoming more popular, reaching 45.34%.

Windows 11 remains the leading operating system, installed on 70.25% of computers, followed by Windows 10, whose share has fallen to 23.30%.

Memory and displays

On system memory, the breakdown is 16GB at 40.97%, 32GB at 36.93% and 8GB at 7.98%. These systems are most commonly paired with a 1920x1080 monitor, used by 51.1% of respondents. Steam's full survey results are available on Valve's website.

Background on the GTX 3060

Nvidia's GeForce GTX 3060 first launched in 2021 and has remained a budget favourite among PC gamers for years. In June 2026, Nvidia relaunched the GeForce RTX 3060 with 12GB of memory, pricing it the same as it was back in 2021.
