Dominican musical group Sistema Temperado and saxophonist Sandy Gabriel headlined the first edition of Jazz Nights at BlueMall Puntacana on Friday, August 21.
The inaugural performance took place at The Scene restaurant inside the BlueMall Puntacana commercial complex in Punta Cana. The evening featured a live concert that blended traditional jazz, rock elements, and native Dominican rhythms.
Pianist, composer, and arranger Rafelito Mirabal led his group Sistema Temperado on stage, joined by virtuoso saxophonist Sandy Gabriel as a special guest performer. The headline artists were accompanied by a backing ensemble of Dominican musicians, including percussionist Cukin Curiel, drummer Hisdra Alvarez, and bassist Euris Belliard. Musician Reyson Pimentel also participated in the show.
During what organizers described as an emotional concert, the ensemble performed several emblematic musical compositions together. Their setlist included the songs El cadete. E' un tiguere, Hoyo negro, and the widely recognized piece Periblues.
Dominican jazz fusion and career backgrounds
Rafelito Mirabal has been an influential figure in Dominican music since launching his professional career in 1985. From the mid-1980s onward, Mirabal has worked as a promoter and musical director for jazz ensembles, focusing much of his work in the central region of the Dominican Republic.
Mirabal founded Sistema Temperado in 1987, and the group has remained continuously active, performing at concerts and festivals both within the country and internationally. Through Sistema Temperado, Mirabal has focused on fusing native Dominican music like merengue with universal genres such as jazz and rock.
Merengue is a fast-paced genre of Caribbean music and dance that is widely recognized as a central element of Dominican cultural heritage. In jazz fusion ensembles, lead instruments like the saxophone and piano work alongside syncopated percussion to combine complex jazz harmonies with native island beats.
The central region of the Dominican Republic, anchored by cities such as Santiago de los Caballeros, has historically maintained a strong tradition of regional jazz promotion and musical innovation. Local venues in this area have hosted regular jazz series and served as testing grounds for Caribbean fusion projects.
Guest saxophonist Sandy Gabriel built the early foundation of his musical career in Puerto Plata, a coastal city in the northern Dominican Republic. He gained early professional experience playing with jazz groups in resort hotels across the tourist destination.
Gabriel later expanded his career to perform at major music festivals, including local jazz gatherings in Puerto Plata and the international Heineken Jazz Festival. During his appearances at the Heineken festival, Gabriel performed alongside renowned international jazz artists including Néstor Torres, Tito Puente, Sérgio Mendes, Spyro Gyra, Paquito de Rivera, Chucho Valdés, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenour, Arturo Sandoval, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba.
On his debut musical album, Gabriel collaborated with prominent guest artists including Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdés, master percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, and acclaimed bassist John Benitez.
The Heineken Jazz Festival grew into one of the Caribbean region's most celebrated annual music events, bringing together internationally renowned instrumentalists and Latin jazz masters. Puerto Plata itself remains a major hub for Atlantic coast tourism and cultural history in the country.

The inaugural Jazz Nights event in Punta Cana was produced by Caribbean Lifestyle alongside Amo a República Dominicana, a cultural initiative led by Carlos Baez Brugal. Hospitality and real estate firm Grupo Thornberry supported the production in its role as host.
The concert received corporate sponsorship and commercial backing from Bluemall Puntacana, automotive dealer Espaillat Motors, and business consultancy Downtown Business Solution Services.
