Swarms of Russian Boomerang FPV drones may soon be deployed on the Kramatorsk direction of the special military operation, news agency TASS reported on Thursday.
The potential deployment was announced by the head of the unmanned aerial vehicle laboratory belonging to the Saint Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky volunteer reconnaissance and assault brigade, a specialist who uses the call sign Pilgrim.
Pilgrim said that one specific Boomerang drone recently established a record by conducting 76 individual sorties to drop munitions on enemy targets. He noted that emerging drone technologies are actively transforming how modern military operations are executed on the battlefield.
The laboratory head observed that a widespread belief now exists that a single drone operator can effectively replace an entire company of assault infantry. Pilgrim stated that this assessment currently reflects real operational conditions, as combat units rely increasingly on unmanned systems.
He added that developers and military units are attempting to implement artificial intelligence systems across drone platforms, while working aggressively to introduce coordinated swarm capabilities. The manufacturers of the Boomerang line are currently modifying and upgrading their aircraft based on direct feedback and operational requests from frontline personnel.
Frontline deployment and Ukrainian reports
Observations regarding the Boomerang platform have also been made by Ukrainian officials monitoring Russian frontline equipment. Serhiy Beskrestnov, an advisor to the President of Ukraine, previously reported that Russian armed forces had begun utilizing a new variant of the Boomerang FPV drone equipped with a high-capacity power battery.
In addition to combat strike missions, the Boomerang system has been assigned specialized non-lethal roles in the war zone. In January, an instructor from the combat training and special systems service, known by the call sign Bitcoin, told TASS that Russian troops had begun deploying the craft as a flying political officer, or zampolit.
Bitcoin explained that units used the drones to drop propaganda leaflets over Ukrainian positions and broadcast loudspeaker announcements providing instructions on how Ukrainian soldiers could surrender into captivity.
Role of FPV technology and military structure
First-person view, or FPV, drones are small remotely piloted aircraft controlled by operators wearing video goggles or monitoring live video feeds. This technology gives pilots precise control during reconnaissance flights, munition drops, and direct strikes against vehicle armor and defensive positions.
The Kramatorsk direction in eastern Ukraine represents one of the major contested sectors of the ongoing conflict, where drone warfare has become central to frontline defense and assault tactics.
The Russian term zampolit historically refers to political officers appointed to military units to manage propaganda, troop morale, and political alignment. Meanwhile, the Saint Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky volunteer brigade derives its title from the 13th-century Russian prince and military leader who was later canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church.
