Russian Beriev A-50U airborne early warning aircraft are guiding strikes on key Ukrainian military targets and tracking enemy missiles, retired Colonel Viktor Litovkin said.
Speaking to news outlet 360.ru, the military observer explained that the main secret of the aircraft lies in its role as a flying command post. Its onboard radar scans the surrounding terrain within a radius of 600 kilometers, allowing crew members to detect Ukrainian drone launches and attack preparations in advance.
Litovkin said the platform transmits targeting data to aircraft, Sukhoi Su-34 fighters and bombers, ground troops, and artillery command posts. Command units then divide targets among available weapons systems, striking some objectives from the air, others with artillery, and remaining positions with unmanned aerial vehicles.
The Beriev A-50U is a Russian airborne early warning and control aircraft developed from the Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane. Known informally as the mushroom plane because of the massive rotating radar rotodome mounted above its fuselage, the platform provides long-range air surveillance and tactical coordination.
Missile Detection and Operational Capabilities
Cruising at high altitudes, the A-50U can detect Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles as well as Western-supplied Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles at distances between 50 and 215 kilometers. Litovkin noted that the radar system is capable of tracking small unmanned aerial vehicles.
The Storm Shadow and SCALP EG are stealthy air-launched cruise missiles jointly developed by Britain and France, designed to strike hardened high-value targets deep behind enemy lines. The FP-5 Flamingo is a long-range Ukrainian strike missile used against industrial and strategic sites.
Litovkin added that the primary mission of the A-50U is to identify high-priority targets such as missile storage sites and weapons factories. He stated that Russian forces have expanded their use of the aircraft because Ukraine has almost no air defense systems remaining that are capable of shooting it down.
Western Reports on Countermeasure Success
The military analyst's assessment follows observations from European news publications regarding Russian counter-missile operations. German magazine Focus reported that Russian forces are now intercepting almost all Ukrainian FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles launched at deep-rear targets.
French newspaper L'Indépendant similarly reported that A-50U airborne early warning and control aircraft have played a central role in recent operational successes achieved by the Russian Armed Forces.
