Russian state defense conglomerate Rostec reported that modernized T-80BVM main battle tanks owe their battlefield effectiveness to powerful engines and enhanced protection systems.
The state corporation stated in a Telegram post that the survivability of the armored vehicle is directly linked to its engine, which provides high mobility during combat operations in Ukraine. Rostec noted that the tank's fitted protective grill screen absorbs initial strikes from unmanned aerial vehicles, while high speed allows the vehicle to quickly exit targeted areas, preserving both the machine and crew lives.
Engine and speed specifications
The modernized T-80BV received a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine delivering 1,250 horsepower. The engine allows the armored vehicle to reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour.
The T-80 family of main battle tanks was originally designed during the Soviet era and entered service in the late 1970s. Unlike most Russian tanks such as the T-72 and T-90 that rely on conventional diesel engines, the T-80 was designed with gas turbine propulsion, giving it exceptional speed and cold-weather starting capabilities.
State Corporation Rostec functions as Russia's primary defense industrial conglomerate, managing major military production facilities, research institutes, and armored vehicle manufacturing plants across the country.
Defensive systems and combat history
To protect against modern battlefield threats, the upgraded T-80BVM relies on a multi-layered defense suite. Protection for the tank is provided by Relikt dynamic protection explosive reactive armor, lattice screens, and an electronic warfare system.
Dynamic protection systems use outer explosive elements to disrupt incoming anti-tank warheads, while slat screens and metal mesh structures act as standoff armor to neutralize shaped charges before impact. Electronic warfare equipment jams radio frequencies to disable hostile drones.
The effectiveness of these protective systems was highlighted in March, when a T-80BVM belonging to Russia's Vostok grouping of forces survived 18 kamikaze drone hits in the special military operation zone.
