Pope Leo XIV called greed a disease of the soul that causes people to lose their sense of what truly matters, delivering the warning during his Sunday Angelus prayer before the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square in the Vatican.
The pope said that even holidays could become a time of serene fraternity, including those nearby who are living in situations of need, according to the Spanish news agency Efe. He urged the faithful to ask the Virgin Mary, as a caring mother, to help them grow in charity so that no one would go without their daily bread.
Leo XIV also reminded those present that alongside an abundance of goods that go to waste stand the outstretched hands of those who have nothing to eat and the destroyed homes of those who have no peace.
