Santo Domingo is hosting the 12th edition of the International Photography Festival Photoimagen this weekend, with an extensive program of exhibitions spread across the city's museums and cultural venues. The shows explore memory, identity, nature and different ways of looking at the surrounding environment.
At the Museo de Arte Moderno, the exhibition "Quisqueya Henriquez: Archivos de lo posible" continues its run. It is built around a selection of materials from Henriquez's personal archive, presented not simply as a set of documents but as a living space of research that allows visitors to reconstruct her creative process and open new readings of her artistic legacy.
Award-winning and international work on show
The same route includes "El gran relato," a selection of works that won the Oskar Barnack Award, a prize given by the camera manufacturer Leica. Also on display is "Excessocenus," by Cristina de Middel and Bruno Morais, a project that won a Greenpeace Photo Award, alongside "Fotolibros: imagen, memoria y relato," featuring photobook work by Dominican and international creators, and "El Caribe: la maquina infinita. Del ingenio azucarero a la IA," by Carlos Acero Ruiz and Ricardo Arispe.
Dialogue between Caribbean artists has its own dedicated space in "Arquetipos Caribe: miradas fotograficas," which brings together the work of the Puerto Rican photographer Hector Mendez Caratini and the Dominican photographer Mariano Hernandez.
Bellapart and the Centro de la Imagen
The Museo Bellapart is keeping open "El Prado en el Centro: fotografia y memoria," an exhibition that gathers work by the Dominican photographers Polibio Diaz, Fausto Ortiz and Mayra Johnson alongside pieces by well-known contemporary Spanish photographers from different generations.
The route also passes through the Centro de la Imagen, the Dominican Republic's leading photography institution, where two shows are on view: "Pseudomodernidad: entre jardines y ciudades," by Susan Mezquita, and "Desde la ventana: 200 anos de fotografia," produced by Ricardo Arispe and Carlos Acero Ruiz.
At Casa de Teatro, the Italian photographer Marco Inzerillo presents "Antillanidades," while at Arte San Ramon, Ysabella Coll shows "Interconexion."
New exhibitions and a tribute
Starting today, the Centro Cultural de Espana is adding "La memoria de las frutas," by the Spanish visual artist Claudia Claremi, to the festival lineup. Meanwhile, Quinta Dominica will pay tribute to the Dominican photographer Ruben Abud with a selection of his images and screenings of the documentary "El fotografo de la 40," made by Erika Santelices and Orlando Barria.
Saturday's program
On Saturday, the Museo de Historia Natural will host "Volver: alas del Caribe, un puente natural," an exhibition by the group Fotoguardianes de la Naturaleza, coordinated by the Dominican photographer Pedro Genaro.
A parallel circuit of shows
Photoimagen's parallel circuit is also underway. "Cuerpos en transito," by Isis Martinez, Aris D'Orville and Vilma Cabrera, is showing at the Centro Cultural Amaya, while the Santiago-based photography group Sumergidos presents "Mythos" at the Instituto Cultural Dominico Americano. At the Sala Patricia Reid Baquero, part of the Museo de la Catedral, Sandra Garip presents "A la Merced."
