NASA has modified the design requirements for its next-generation lunar spacesuit to keep the Artemis IV mission schedule on track, publication ArsTechnica reported.

The new specifications demand a simpler design for the extravehicular suit. As a result of the updated requirements, spacesuit developer Axiom Space will manufacture a lighter version of the lunar garment.

NASA, the civilian space agency of the United States government, created the Artemis program to return human exploration to the lunar surface. To equip astronauts for operations on the Moon, NASA contracted Axiom Space, a commercial space infrastructure and aerospace developer headquartered in Houston, Texas.

According to ArsTechnica, NASA originally intended to receive the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit, known as the AxEMU suit. The initial technical plan called for a spacesuit capable of enduring six separate spacewalks over the course of a 6.5-day surface mission.

The original guidelines also specified that the spacesuits had to remain fully operational and ready for use over a total timeframe of 210 days. In addition, the equipment needed to support continuous astronaut operation for two hours under the extreme temperature conditions of the lunar night.

Collaboration with fashion house Prada

In October 2024, industry publication SpaceNews reported that Axiom Space unveiled a design concept for the AxEMU spacesuit. The suit was created in partnership with Prada, the Italian luxury fashion brand renowned for its advanced textile design and material engineering, to serve NASA during its crewed Artemis lunar landings.

SpaceNews and ArsTechnica are leading news outlets covering aerospace engineering, space policy, and technological developments. Commercial partnerships between private aerospace firms and specialized design companies have become increasingly prominent as NASA relies on private industry for space suit development.

Spacesuit complexity and orbital comparisons

Earlier in the year, International Space Station commander Sergei Kud-Sverchkov highlighted the immense engineering complexity involved in building suits for outer space. In May, Kud-Sverchkov said that the Russian Orlan spacesuit could be compared to a small spacecraft.

Sergei Kud-Sverchkov is a Russian cosmonaut who led operations aboard the International Space Station, a multi-nation orbital laboratory located in low Earth orbit. The Orlan spacesuit is a semi-rigid garment manufactured in Russia that provides life support and pressure containment during extravehicular activities outside space stations.

By streamlining the AxEMU suit specifications, NASA aims to reduce development complexity and keep contractor Axiom Space on schedule as preparations continue for the Artemis IV mission.
