Lionel Richie Hospitalized in Intensive Care in Missouri

American soul singer Lionel Richie has been admitted to intensive care at a hospital in Saint Louis, Missouri, after displaying severe fatigue during a concert.

The 77-year-old performer entered the medical facility over the weekend following his show on Saturday, August 29. According to a source cited by entertainment news outlet TMZ, Richie suffered from dehydration during the performance and decided to seek hospital care voluntarily to undergo routine health checks.

Medical staff are expected in all likelihood to discharge the legendary musician on Tuesday. The hospitalisation marks a sudden halt for the artist, who is currently on tour in the United States.

Onstage Fatigue in Saint Louis

Concertgoers in Saint Louis noticed signs of tiredness early in the show. In video footage posted on social media by an audience member, Richie can be seen asking a crew member for a chair during the opening chords of his 1983 hit song All Night Long.

The singer remained seated on stage for the remainder of the performance. The moment drew a stark contrast to the energetic acrobatics displayed in the classic music video for the same track four decades ago.

Richie is one of the most successful soul and pop artists of his generation, having risen to international prominence as a co-lead vocalist for the Commodores before building a massive solo career with Motown Records. His catalog includes global hits such as Hello, Truly, and Endless Love, establishing him as an enduring figure in popular music.

Previous Health Scare in Minnesota

The weekend incident in Missouri is not the first health emergency for Richie since the start of his current concert tour. In June, the performer was forced to interrupt a concert in Saint Paul, Minnesota, after experiencing a sudden onset of dizziness.

That previous episode occurred in the middle of his hit song Dancing on the Ceiling. Richie was transported by ambulance from the venue to a local hospital for treatment, though he was able to recover quickly and resume his touring schedule a few days later.

Saint Paul, the capital city of Minnesota, was one of several major stops on Richie's regional tour dates across the American Midwest prior to his arrival in Missouri.

Lifestyle and Longevity

Richie has previously spoken about the physical demands of touring and maintaining his health late into his career. In a 2023 interview with the Daily Mail, the musician shared his personal secrets to remaining active on stage.

He explained at the time that his health routine relied heavily on staying hydrated with water, getting adequate sleep, working up a sweat, and avoiding excessive amounts of red meat. While acknowledging that such a disciplined regimen might seem boring, he added that maintaining an active sex life was also beneficial for heart health.

Fans now await official confirmation of his discharge from the Saint Louis facility on Tuesday as medical teams complete their evaluations.
