Farmers in the Gironde region of France are counting the cost of a wildfire that burned 42,000 hectares, with the blaze now contained for 24 hours but the hardest period only beginning for those affected.
Growers who worked alongside firefighters during the peak of the flames now face what the report described as colossal losses. Equipment has been damaged and crops harmed, leaving the harvest in serious doubt.
Beyond the physical destruction, farmers in the evacuated zone were also unable to complete sales during the week of the fire, adding a further financial blow on top of the damage to land and machinery.
