Getafe president Angel Torres has announced he will step down at the end of 2028 once the ongoing remodeling of the Coliseum stadium is finished.
Speaking to journalist Joseba Larranaga on Spanish radio programme El Partidazo de COPE during a 13-minute interview from Belgrade, the club owner confirmed that completing the stadium upgrade will mark the end of his tenure at the Spanish top-flight side.
Getafe, located in the Madrid metropolitan area, have established themselves in LaLiga under Torres, who has managed the club's business and sports operations as sole owner.
Torres explained that a year and a half of construction work remains on the Coliseum to turn the venue into a modern 20,000-seat stadium. He said the project would be his final contribution to the club, adding that someone younger, hungrier and with the desire to fight should take over. If everything progresses normally, he will depart at the end of 2028.
Financial pressures and player sales
The Getafe president outlined the continuous financial effort required to sustain the club, reiterating that he is the sole owner. He noted that matchday ticket revenues have fallen in recent years because of ongoing stadium works, making player sales essential to prevent the club from recording annual losses.
Torres also addressed stadium logistics, ruling out any temporary agreement to share the Coliseum with local rivals Rayo Vallecano due to reduced crowd capacity during renovations. Furthermore, he criticized LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation, stating that football authorities should have allowed clubs with stadium construction under way to play their opening matches of the season away from home to protect their pitches.
European competition and squad updates
Turning to sports matters in Belgrade, Torres emphasized the importance of Getafe's European campaign in the UEFA Conference League. He stated that securing access to the group stage represents roughly 20 percent of Getafe's annual budget, which is set between 75 million and 80 million euros.
Torres offered strong praise for head coach Jose Bordalas, describing the manager as a lifesaver for the club. He added that everyone at Getafe is delighted with Bordalas, despite acknowledging the manager's demanding nature. Torres also highlighted the return of attackers such as Enes Unal, who prioritized returning to the team.
Getafe enter their European fixture against Partizan Belgrade holding a two-goal advantage from the first leg. They face a Serbian club currently navigating an institutional crisis while performing in front of a high-pressure crowd at Partizan Stadium.
