Filippos Kampouris arrested over €5 million Greek fraud

Greek police have arrested political party leader and television presenter Filippos Kampouris after dismantling an alleged fraud ring that cost the national treasury and social security fund more than €5 million.

Officers from the Financial Crimes Prosecution Sub-Directorate detained the 45-year-old president of the LAOS political party along with his wife and six suspected accomplices during a series of raids in the Athens area. Authorities allege that Kampouris held a directorial role within the criminal organization.

The eight suspects taken into custody include two businessmen, two accountants accused of supplying technical expertise to conceal illegal activities, and two frontmen whose names were used to register shell businesses and transferred commercial operations.

LAOS, officially known as the Popular Orthodox Rally, is a right-wing political party in Greece. The Electronic National Social Security Fund, known as e-EFKA, is the state agency responsible for collecting social insurance contributions and paying pensions nationwide.

Dawn raid on seafront apartment

Kampouris was arrested early in the morning at a four-storey apartment building on Kanari Street in Alimos, located directly on the seafront. Officers carried out what residents described as a surgical raid on the property, which was leased in the name of his wife, who was arrested alongside him.

Alimos is a coastal suburb situated south of central Athens along the Saronic Gulf.

According to police information, the group had been operating since at least 2021. Authorities estimate that the ring defrauded the state treasury and e-EFKA out of more than €5 million by evading required social security contributions.

Investigators revealed that the network set up 25 commercial entities, including advertising agencies, restaurants, nightclubs, and clothing shops. The group failed to pay insurance contributions for these businesses before systematically shutting them down and opening new ones under the same pattern.

Police searches and political link

Authorities are also examining whether the front companies issued invoices directly to the LAOS political party.

As part of the operation, police executed search warrants at multiple properties linked to the ring's members. Searches took place at the Alimos residence of Kampouris, a grill house in Kallithea, and a warehouse located in Piraeus.

Kallithea is a densely populated suburb in southern Athens, while Piraeus is the major port city adjoining the Greek capital. The Financial Crimes Prosecution Sub-Directorate operates as a specialized division of the Hellenic Police dedicated to investigating organized financial fraud and tax evasion.
