A 16-year-old boy has been charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder after an eight-year-old girl was found severely injured beside her dead father at a home in Dungannon, Northern Ireland.
Police officers discovered the deceased 61-year-old man alongside his daughter and his 48-year-old wife following reports of a domestic disturbance on Lisnahull Road on Saturday morning.
The eight-year-old girl was rushed to the Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children after sustaining serious injuries in the alleged attack. Hospital officials say she is currently in a stable condition.
Her 48-year-old mother also suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident. She received treatment from medical staff before being discharged from hospital.
Police investigation and court appearance
Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland arrested the 16-year-old suspect at the property on Saturday on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Officers were later granted a 36-hour court extension to continue interviewing the teenager in custody before bringing formal charges.
The youth has now been formally charged with murder and two counts of attempted murder. He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before Omagh Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.
Dungannon is a market town in County Tyrone, situated within the Mid Ulster District council area in the south-east of the county. Lisnahull Road is located in a quiet residential area on the eastern edge of the town.

Police details on emergency response
Superintendent Peter Stevenson, the Mid Ulster District Commander, outlined details of the police response during a press conference on Monday, shortly before the teenager was charged.
Stevenson said that emergency services responded after receiving a call from a member of the public just after 10.55am on Saturday reporting an ongoing disturbance at the Lisnahull Road address.
"Officers arrived a short time later and discovered the body of a man aged 61, his 48-year-old wife, who had sustained non-life threatening injuries, and their severely injured eight-year-old daughter," Stevenson said.
The superintendent praised the initial medical care provided by the first officers who arrived at the scene.
"Our officers immediately commenced first aid on the woman and girl, and I am in no doubt that their quick-thinking actions gave the young girl a fighting chance of survival," Stevenson said. "She is now in a stable condition in hospital."
Community safety and ongoing enquiries
Stevenson confirmed that the 16-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, noting that investigators were granted extra time by a court to question him.
The district commander reassured local residents that police do not believe there is any wider threat to the public following the attack. He added that the public will see an increased police presence in the local area as officers carry out further enquiries.
"We have a significant number of detectives and local policing officers dedicated to working on this case," Stevenson said. "We understand the public interest and concern and will continue to bring updates as our investigation progresses."
