Increasing daily step counts can improve asthma symptoms as effectively as supervised treadmill workouts, according to a study published in the medical journal Pulmonology.

Researchers evaluated 52 adults aged between 18 and 65 who suffered from moderate to severe uncontrolled asthma alongside low initial levels of physical activity. Over an eight-week trial, participants who gradually walked more steps each day achieved health gains comparable to those who completed structured gym sessions.

Comparing daily step increases and treadmill sessions

The clinical trial split participants into two distinct treatment groups to compare formal physical training against informal daily movement. One group engaged in 45-minute treadmill workouts twice a week under the direct supervision of exercise specialists. The second group received instructions to gradually increase the number of steps they walked during their normal daily routines.

Structured aerobic exercise programs typically rely on specific intensity targets and specialized fitness equipment like treadmills to maintain elevated heart rates. In clinical settings, such workouts require scheduling, dedicated facility space, and supervision by trained staff to monitor safety.

Following the eight-week intervention, investigators monitored all volunteers for an additional four months to observe whether physical improvements persisted over time. Both strategies yielded noticeable progress in asthma control, overall quality of life, and reductions in anxiety and depression. Researchers reported no statistically significant advantage of structured treadmill training over simply walking more each day.

Activity measurements taken immediately after the eight-week program showed that participants in the treadmill group walked an average of 1,537 more steps per day than before the trial began. Those in the regular walking group increased their daily activity by an average of 1,126 steps per day. Researchers noted that a portion of these positive physical changes remained evident four months after the intervention concluded.

Understanding asthma and the role of physical activity

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that causes periodic attacks of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Uncontrolled asthma occurs when symptoms persist despite standard medical management, often restricting physical performance and causing emotional distress, including elevated rates of anxiety and depression.

The journal Pulmonology is a peer-reviewed medical publication focusing on respiratory disease, lung function, and pulmonary health. Physical activity has long been studied as a non-pharmacological support for respiratory illness, as regular exercise can improve cardiovascular fitness and breathing efficiency.

The co-occurrence of mental health challenges alongside chronic physical illness is well documented in medical literature. Physical exercise promotes the release of mood-regulating neurotransmitters in the brain, which can help alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression among individuals living with long-term health conditions.

The study authors highlighted that increasing daily walking offers a more practical and accessible alternative to organized aerobic programs. Unlike structured gym workouts, routine daily walking requires no specialized fitness equipment, financial expense, or continuous supervision by healthcare specialists.

However, investigators emphasized that physical activity serves solely as a complementary measure alongside primary medical therapy. Patients diagnosed with asthma must continue taking all medications prescribed by their physicians, as physical movement does not replace standard drug regimens.

Broader health benefits of light exercise

The findings build upon previous medical research into the wide-ranging health benefits of low-intensity physical movement. Earlier studies have demonstrated that as little as 10 minutes of very slow running can improve executive functions in the brain, including working memory, mental flexibility, and cognitive control.

By demonstrating that modest increases in daily movement support respiratory health and mental well-being, researchers hope to encourage individuals managing chronic airway conditions to incorporate simple walking into their daily routines.
