Director Zoi Xanthopoulou is teaming up with the theatre group PYR and Theatro Thision, ENA THEATRO GIA TIS TECHNES, to stage Anton Chekhov's "The Seagull" for only nine performances in Athens, in what the venue describes as a sharp, unexpected staged reading that bridges the classic drama with contemporary performance.
The production brings one of the great works of world theatre to the stage in a challenging format: three actors and one musician appear on stage to bring the entire Chekhovian universe to life. Set in a stage landscape resembling a modern "junkyard," the characters grapple with decay, the need for recognition and the anguish of artistic survival.
Through the device of "theatre within theatre" and with strong elements of neorealism, life and acting become intertwined until they merge into one, according to the production description.
Themes and Questions Raised
The staging poses questions about what the seagull ultimately symbolises, how much poetry everyday life can bear, what defines human relationships, and how Chekhovian futility is born. It also asks where the actors, and the audience, go when the lights go out. The production is described as a whirl through the demons of Chekhov's characters, filled with humour, tragedy, existential despair and music.
Anton Chekhov, the Russian playwright and short story writer, wrote "The Seagull" in 1895; it is considered one of the foundational works of modern theatre and helped establish the Moscow Art Theatre's approach to naturalistic acting.
Renovated Venue and Production Credits
Theatro Thision said that after listening to audience feedback, it has renovated its seating, adding backrests to its distinctive benches to ensure maximum comfort during the performance.
The production was staged as part of the Greek Culture Ministry's 2026 programme "All of Greece, One Culture."
The translation is by Xenia Kalogeropoulou, with direction and dramaturgical work by Zoi Xanthopoulou and music by Fotis Siotas. Yiota Panagi serves as dramaturgy consultant, with press and communications by Evangelia Skrombola and photographs by Kiki Papadopoulou. The cast features Despina Kourti, Giorgos Papapavlou and Vasilis Zafeiropoulos, with Tasos Misyrlis performing live on stage as musician.
Dates and Tickets
Performances run from September 18 to October 4, 2026, every Friday and Saturday at 21:00 and Sunday at 20:00, with a running time of 90 minutes.
Tickets cost 18 euros for standard admission, 16 euros for reduced price and 14 euros for groups.
