Market research firm International Data Corporation has sharply downgraded its 2026 global smartphone outlook, warning that inexpensive smartphones face near total extinction as supply pressures mount.
The analytics company drastically lowered its expectations for the global smartphone market for 2026, forecasting a market collapse of 16.7 percent. That represents a significant worsening from its previous prediction of a 14 percent decline, leaving annual worldwide sales at around 200 million units.
Analysts at International Data Corporation stated that an irreversible shortage of DRAM and NAND memory has brought an end to the era of low-cost smartphones. Android device manufacturers focused on cheap models, which already operate on minimal profit margins, are scaling back production and shifting toward higher-priced options.
DRAM provides high-speed working memory for active smartphone applications, while NAND flash memory supplies non-volatile internal storage for operating systems and user files. Shortages of these fundamental hardware components elevate manufacturing costs, making budget devices financially unviable for handset makers.
Impact on manufacturers and market recovery
Smaller device manufacturers have suffered the most from the ongoing supply crisis, as rising component expenses eliminate the narrow margins needed to sustain budget phone lines. Analysts at International Data Corporation believe the global smartphone market will not stabilize until 2028.
Foldable devices represent the only smartphone segment projected to experience growth in 2026. Shipments of foldable handsets are expected to expand by 12.6 percent during the year, reaching a total volume of 22.9 million units worldwide.
Premium market trends and sales leaders
The retreat from budget devices coincides with strong consumer demand for premium flagship smartphones. Research firm Counterpoint Research reported in late August that Apple's iPhone 17 was the best-selling smartphone worldwide in the second quarter of 2026. Apple claimed all three top spots in global sales rankings during that period, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro following the standard model.
