AI influencer Yuri receives official digital ID card

AI influencer Yuri receives official digital ID card

An artificial intelligence influencer named Yuri has been issued an official digital identity card in China as part of a pilot programme. The virtual persona, created entirely through artificial intelligence technology, exists exclusively online and has never possessed a physical body.

Despite having no physical body, Yuri has built a substantial online following of more than 100,000 users across social media platforms. The initiative places the avatar at the centre of a trial testing how formal digital credentials can be assigned to artificial entities operating in the online space.

The identity card issued to Yuri bears a striking resemblance to standard identification credentials used for real human citizens in China. The document includes a full name, a date of birth, a registered residential address, and facial features, despite its holder being an entirely digital creation.

Digital identity credentials are widely used by public administration systems to authenticate individuals for online services, banking, and official registration. Assigning a recognized identity format to an artificial persona allows software creations to be recorded within official administrative databases.

Financial transactions and digital commerce

The pilot project extends beyond symbolic identification by connecting Yuri's digital entity directly to an electronic wallet. This technical connection opens the way for artificial intelligence characters to participate in commercial activities, execute financial transactions, and manage digital funds.

The development reflects the rapid expansion of the virtual influencer and digital human industry in China. Computer-generated characters are increasingly deployed across social media networks, commercial advertisements, live-stream shopping broadcasts, and online storefronts to market products to consumers.

In many commercial broadcasts and advertisements, viewers cannot immediately tell that the presenter on their screen is a computer-generated persona rather than a real human. Establishing an identity system attempts to give clear digital standing to entities that attract hundreds of thousands of followers and generate real income without a traditional human face behind them.

Live-stream shopping and social commerce represent major segments of the modern retail market in China, where presenters demonstrate products and interact with viewers in real time. Electronic wallets function as digital software systems that store payment details and process mobile payments across online commerce applications.

Legal accountability and consumer protection

Granting identity credentials and payment capabilities to synthetic personas introduces complex legal and financial questions. As artificial characters gain the ability to hold money and complete transactions, determining who is legally responsible for their actions presents a major regulatory challenge.

Uncertainty remains over whether legal liability rests with the software creator, the management company operating the persona, or the digital entity itself. Similar questions apply to commercial revenue generated by AI influencers, brand sponsorship deals, corporate taxation, and consumer protection during digital transactions.

Regulatory bodies globally are examining rules for artificial intelligence, synthetic media, and digital asset management. Regulatory frameworks increasingly focus on transparency standards, ensuring consumers are aware whether they are interacting with a real human or an automated AI presenter.

The case of Yuri points toward a future where digital personalities hold official credentials, engage in commercial operations, and carry genuine economic value. These synthetic entities may continue to expand their role in the economy without ever having existed as human beings.
