Anastasios Liaskos has been appointed interim manager of Zakynthos General Hospital following the resignation of Christos Thanopoulos, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced.
Liaskos, a former deputy minister and member of parliament, will lead the hospital on a transitional basis until the Supreme Council for Civil Servant Selection completes a formal recruitment procedure to fill the vacancy.
The management change followed the departure of Thanopoulos, who submitted his resignation a few days ago citing personal reasons. In response to the opening, Georgiadis approached Liaskos with a proposal to take over the administration of the hospital during the interim period, which Liaskos accepted.
Zakynthos General Hospital serves as the principal public medical center for the island of Zakynthos, located in the Ionian Sea off the western coast of Greece. Hospital administrative appointments across the country are subject to civil service hiring guidelines overseen by the Supreme Council for Civil Servant Selection, known as ASEP, which operates as an independent authority responsible for public sector recruitment in Greece.
Ministerial announcement and political support
In an online statement, Georgiadis thanked Liaskos warmly for agreeing to take charge of the hospital and referred to him as a dear friend. The health minister noted that Liaskos was stepping forward once again to assist during a difficult period, adding that Liaskos had previously made history during his tenure as president of the War Museum.
Liaskos has held a variety of positions in Greek public life, having previously served as a member of parliament, deputy minister, secretary general, and prefecture governor. His previous leadership role at the War Museum involved overseeing Greece's primary military history museum in Athens, which functions under the oversight of the Ministry of National Defence.
Dionysis Aktypis, the member of parliament representing Zakynthos, issued a statement expressing particular satisfaction with the appointment of Liaskos as temporary manager and wishing him strength and success in his new duties.
Aktypis stated that Liaskos brought a long and substantial record in public affairs as a former lawmaker, minister, administrator, and museum president. He described those credentials as guarantees of experience, administrative competence, and proven service to the country.
Hospital priorities and future selection process
Highlighting local healthcare goals, Aktypis emphasized that the continuous reinforcement and upgrading of Zakynthos General Hospital remained a constant personal priority. He stated that the experience, authority, and knowledge of an official who had served in high-responsibility positions for many years would contribute substantially to those efforts.
Aktypis added that he knew Liaskos personally and was familiar with his capabilities, diligence, and strong sense of responsibility. Expressing confidence that Liaskos would succeed in his mission, the lawmaker stated that he looked forward to close cooperation to build a strong, modern, and reliable hospital for the people of Zakynthos.
Liaskos will oversee the hospital while the Ministry of Health and ASEP prepare and execute the formal candidate selection process to appoint a permanent hospital governor.
