A 17-year-old youth has been detained in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk after following a 10-year-old schoolgirl home and attacking her inside her apartment. The state news agency TASS reported the arrest, citing the Sakhalin regional investigative department of the Investigative Committee of Russia.

The suspect confessed to law enforcement officers that he broke into the home because he wanted to steal sneakers. A criminal case has been opened regarding the attack, and the regional prosecutor's office has taken control of the investigation.

Anna Pozdina, senior assistant to the head of the regional investigative department of the Investigative Committee of Russia for public interaction and media, said preliminary findings show the suspect followed the minor girl. He went up to her floor with her and waited until she unlocked the apartment door with a key before forcing his way inside.
According to investigators, the suspect grabbed the schoolgirl by the face and demanded that she keep quiet. The girl screamed and fought back, which frightened the attacker and caused him to flee. The suspect was previously caught on video following the 10-year-old girl in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
