Smartphone Buyers Advised to Choose 256GB Storage in 2026

French tech outlet Idée-Astuces recommends choosing a smartphone with at least 256GB of storage for comfortable everyday use in 2026.

Smartphone Buyers Advised to Choose 256GB Storage in 2026

Smartphones with 128 gigabytes of built-in storage may no longer meet the needs of average users in 2026, according to a report by French tech publication Idée-Astuces. Experts at the publication recommend that consumers select devices with at least 256 gigabytes of capacity to ensure comfortable operation.

The media outlet stated that a 256-gigabyte drive allows smartphone owners to install large software applications, record videos, and use their handsets for several years without running out of memory space.

Internal storage on mobile handsets serves as the main digital drive where system software, user files, and application data are stored. Solid-state flash storage measured in gigabytes has steadily expanded in consumer devices as operating systems such as Google Android and Apple iOS increase in features and size.

According to the authors of the Idée-Astuces report, smartphones with 128 gigabytes of storage are now suitable only for basic user demands. Devices with that capacity suit individuals who limit their phone activity to text messaging, web browsing, social media networks, and occasional photo or video recording.

The material explained that users never have access to the full 128 gigabytes printed on the product packaging. A significant portion of the internal memory is automatically occupied by the device operating system and pre-installed files.

High resolution video and mobile gaming demands

High-definition video recording and modern mobile games require the largest share of device memory. Journalists at Idée-Astuces noted that a single minute of video recorded in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second consumes 400 megabytes of storage space.

Furthermore, individual video games can occupy between 25 and 40 gigabytes of internal storage after downloading additional required files and game updates.

Mobile camera technology has advanced rapidly, making 4K video recording a standard feature on many consumer handsets. High frame rates such as 60 frames per second double the visual temporal detail compared to standard broadcast video, generating substantial data volume on local flash drives.

The specialists concluded that remote cloud storage services cannot completely solve local storage limitations. While users can offload photographs and documents to cloud servers, software applications and operating system updates cannot be installed directly on cloud storage.

Android optimization and battery settings

In a related report on smartphone performance, technology publication MakeUseOf identified hidden configuration options on Android devices that can extend overall battery operating time. Journalists at the publication stated that modifying specific settings within the system menu helps prolong battery life.

MakeUseOf advised Android users to turn off the Always On Display feature and disable automatic background scanning for Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth devices.

The Android operating system, developed by Google, powers millions of mobile devices worldwide and offers customizable background parameters. Features such as continuous wireless network polling and ambient display lighting consume continuous battery power when active on modern handsets.
