Russian military forces have deployed new Malysh interceptor drones against Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in the Dobropillia direction, the Russian Ministry of Defence reported on September 10, 2026.
According to the ministry, operators belonging to the Center group of forces successfully targeted Ukrainian drones operating along the Dobropillia sector of the frontline. The intercepts were carried out by a specialized drone crew from the 506th Guards Motor Rifle Regiment, which forms part of the 27th Guards Motor Rifle Division of the Russian Armed Forces.

The crew utilized the new interceptor system to track down and strike both Leleka reconnaissance drones and Hornet attack drones operated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Ukrainian reconnaissance drones are typically used to gather intelligence and direct artillery fire, while strike drones carry explosive payloads aimed at frontline positions.
The Malysh is a twin-engine, fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with an automated launch feature. The automated launch capability is designed to reduce the amount of time crew members must spend exposed at launch positions before sending the aircraft into the air.
Malysh Interceptor Capabilities
The defence ministry stated that recent updates to the interceptor introduced additional flight modes that significantly enhance the maneuverability of the aircraft. The ministry added that these modified control modes make handling the drone much easier for operators during high-speed combat maneuvers.
The aircraft is also fitted with a swiveling camera mechanism that provides operators with a 180-degree field of view. This expanded viewing angle allows operators to locate and track fast-moving enemy targets across a wider swath of airspace.
During combat operations, Malysh operators operate in a free hunt mode while also receiving targeting data from ground-based radar stations. Once an airborne threat is identified, operators destroy enemy drones either by physically ramming them in flight or by triggering the remote detonation of the Malysh's onboard warhead.
Drone Countermeasures and Radar Integration
The Dobropillia direction is located in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, an area that has seen extensive military engagements and heavy use of unmanned aircraft by both sides. Defensive interceptor drones have emerged as a primary tool to counter opposing drone activity without consuming expensive surface-to-air defense missiles.
The deployment follows wider Russian efforts to bolster counter-drone capabilities across the frontline. In August, Russian technology holding company Rosel created the Sokol-08 radar station, a specialized detection system built specifically to track and identify swarms of incoming enemy drones.
