Russia celebrates Air Fleet Day on August 16, marking more than a century of aviation history that developed from early heavy aircraft into a major transport industry.

The annual holiday, established in 1933, highlights a legacy that began when designer Igor Sikorsky created the world's first heavy multi-engine planes, the Russky Vityaz and Ilya Muromets.

On the eve of World War I, public interest in capital cities focused heavily on demonstration flights, where onlookers gathered to watch early aircraft that Sikorsky described as aerial kayaks.

Sikorsky staked his professional reputation on creating a massive four-engine airplane originally named the Grand, or Grand Baltic, funded by the Russo-Baltic Wagon Works.

Pioneering Heavy Aviation

The aircraft, renamed the Russky Vityaz or S-21, represented the first four-engine plane built anywhere in the world and paved the way for multi-passenger air travel.

Emperor Nicholas II visited the Krasnoye Selo airfield on July 25, 1913, writing in his diary that at about 4 o'clock he inspected Sikorsky's new large airplane in detail before reportedly presenting the designer with a gold watch.

On August 2, 1913, the Russky Vityaz set a world record by flying with passengers for 1 hour and 54 minutes, earning Sikorsky a prize of 75,000 rubles.

Skeptics in France and Germany initially doubted reports of the flight, but photograph evidence and press reports confirmed that Russian engineering had broken ahead of Western competitors.

Early Russian flight experiments dated back to Alexander Mozhaysky, who built a machine called the Firebird in the summer of 1882.

Writer Vasily Zakharchenko noted in his book Oleg Antonov that Mozhaysky's craft launched down an inclined ramp under a mechanic's control, briefly lifting off before falling onto its wing.

Early Russian Designers

Mozhaysky lacked formal aeronautical training, working well before the Wright brothers completed the first controlled internal combustion engine flight on December 17, 1903.

Scientist Nikolai Zhukovsky established theoretical aerodynamics with his 1891 paper On the Soaring of Birds, while designer Yakov Gakkel began building aircraft in 1909.

Pilot Vladimir Bulgakov made one of Russia's first confirmed domestic flights on June 6, 1910, flying the Gakkel-III for roughly 200 meters.

Gakkel designed the Gakkel-V as Russia's first amphibious plane project, though it never flew, before test pilot Gleb Alekhnovich achieved major milestones on later models.

Alekhnovich completed the first intercity flight from Gatchina to Tsarskoye Selo on the Gakkel-VI in May 1911 and set a national altitude record of 1,350 meters on the Gakkel-VIII in May 1912.

Aviation during this era inspired cultural figures such as futurist poet and aviator Vasily Kamensky, alongside self-taught builders working across numerous Russian towns.

The single Russky Vityaz airframe was destroyed when an engine fell from another plane piloted by Adam Gaber-Volynsky, prompting Sikorsky to design a superior aircraft.

Comfort and Military Bomber Conversion

In December 1913, 24-year-old Sikorsky launched the Ilya Muromets, a larger heavy multi-engine plane financed by sugar manufacturer son Fyodor Tereshchenko.

Author Pyotr Obraztsov noted in his book Igor Sikorsky that the plane featured unprecedented passenger comfort, including a cabin separate from the cockpit, sleeping quarters, a bathroom, exhaust heating, and electric lighting.

Early models used 140-horsepower German Argus engines, while later variants used domestic units such as Vasily Kireev's six-cylinder R-BVZ based on a Benz design.

In February 1914, Sikorsky flew with 16 passengers and a dog named Shkalik, setting a payload record of 1,290 kilograms that surpassed French aviator Roger Sommer's 653-kilogram biplane record.

The Russo-Baltic Works produced the Ilya Muromets in series, creating what researcher Vasily Zakharchenko called the prototype of modern passenger airliners.

Because civil passenger infrastructure was lacking, the aircraft was adopted by the military during World War I as the world's first serial heavy multi-engine bomber and reconnaissance plane.

Before the war broke out, Sikorsky used the Ilya Muromets-B variant to set an altitude record and complete a historic flight from Saint Petersburg to Kyiv with only two stops in summer 1914.

Designer Vasily Slesarev attempted to build an even larger plane called the Svyatogor in 1916, but testing ended after his early death and the loss of his records.

Creation of the Soviet Air Fleet

Following the 1917 revolution, Sikorsky moved to France and then to the United States in 1919, where he became a renowned designer of helicopters.

Soviet aviation development continued, as author Yuri Olesha wrote in his novel Envy that aircraft had come to resemble heavy fish as flying rapidly transformed into an industry.

The Workers' and Peasants' Red Air Fleet was established in 1918, celebrating its official holiday on July 14 between 1925 and 1933.

Soviet civil aviation traces its founding to February 9, 1923, when the Council of Labor and Defense established the Council for Civil Aviation and Technical Supervision of Air Lines.

The Dobrolet aviation society was formed in 1923, launching the first regular domestic passenger route between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod in June of that year.

The first Soviet passenger plane, the AK-1, was built under Vladimir Aleksandrov with Vladimir Kalinin and Aleksey Cheremukhin, flying first in 1924 and completing a Moscow to Beijing and Tokyo flight in 1925.

Commercial Expansion and Air Parades

Andrei Tupolev designed the ANT-9 Wings of Soviets, which flew on May 5, 1929, seating nine passengers and completing a major European tour flight through Berlin, Paris, Rome, Marseilles, London, and Warsaw.

Decree No. 859 of the Council of People's Commissars formally established Air Fleet Day in 1933, celebrating for the first time on August 18 at Khodynka Field in Moscow.

The debut 1933 celebration included aerial displays by TB-1 and TB-3 bombers, I-5 and I-7 fighters, ANT-9 and ANT-14 Pravda passenger planes, and AIR series light aircraft.

Holiday observances moved to the third Sunday of August starting in 1972, after periods of fixed August 18 dates and summer weekend schedules following World War II.

The holiday was omitted only in 1992 following government transition decrees, resuming regular annual celebrations in 1993.

The Jet Age and Heavy Cargo

Soviet passenger aviation entered the jet age in 1955 with the Tu-104, the world's third serial jet airliner after the British Comet and Canadian Jetliner, entering service in 1956.

The Tu-104 carried between 50 and 100 passengers at cruising speeds up to 800 kilometers per hour, drawing international attention at the 1959 Le Bourget Air Show before paving the way for the supersonic Tu-144.

In 1965, designer Oleg Antonov presented the An-22 Antei cargo plane at Le Bourget, featuring an 80-ton payload capacity capable of seating 720 passengers in a theoretical configuration.

The evolution of the air fleet required vast networks of airfields, engine manufacturing, navigation systems, and crew training, transforming early records into a major economic sector.
