Computer scientist and inventor Ray Kurzweil has predicted that humanity will merge with artificial intelligence by 2045, an event known as the technological singularity.

In his 2024 book The Singularity is Nearer, Kurzweil reaffirmed his timeline for the arrival of artificial general intelligence and outlined a future where humans will have access to technologies that vastly expand the brain's cognitive capabilities.

One possible route for this merger would be the use of nanobots, or microscopic robots, capable of interacting with the nervous system through blood vessels. This would create a bridge between the biological brain and computer systems.

Through this connection, Kurzweil proposed that natural and artificial intelligence could fuse into a single system, potentially increasing human intelligence by a million times by 2045.

He noted this would not simply mean having faster computers or smarter voice assistants, but rather a profound transformation in how people learn, process information, and interact with technology.

The path to a hybrid future

Kurzweil, a prominent futurist who has worked on machine learning and speech recognition for decades, previously predicted in 1999 that artificial intelligence would emerge around 2029. While considered bold at the time, the rapid development of generative AI has made the forecast appear more plausible.

Although not all researchers agree with Kurzweil's timeline, the idea of a gradual convergence between humans and machines is increasingly discussed. Artificial intelligence is already heavily involved in fields such as creativity, scientific research, programming, and decision-making.

According to Kurzweil's scenario, the next stage of development will be marked by technologies that interact directly with the brain rather than just assisting people externally.

This raises complex philosophical questions regarding the limit between human and technology if a machine can significantly expand memory, thought speed, and analytical capacity.

Tackling ageing and automation

Kurzweil's predictions also extend to the fields of medicine and economics. The researcher anticipated that during the 2030s, humanity could reach what he calls the escape velocity of ageing.

This refers to a point where scientific progress will roughly compensate for the physical losses a body experiences each year as a result of getting older.

While this would not guarantee immortality, as accidents, injuries, and other causes of death would remain, Kurzweil suggested the risk of dying from age-related processes might no longer increase inevitably with each passing year of life.

Mass automation is also expected to transform the labour market. If robots and artificial intelligence increasingly perform human tasks, Kurzweil suggested society will need to find new ways to distribute income.

He considers that a universal basic income, a regular guaranteed payment made by the state to all citizens, could become a foundational element of future economic systems.

With nearly two decades until 2045, and a history of technological predictions that have not always proved accurate, a millionfold increase in intelligence and a human and machine merger remain future scenarios rather than established facts.

However, the value of these predictions may not depend solely on getting the date right. They raise a question that until recently seemed like science fiction: what will happen when technology is no longer just a tool for humans, but becomes a part of them?

The answer to that question could be much more important than the specific year the technological singularity arrives.
