Researchers at the University of Idaho have confirmed that the ringtail (Bassariscus astutus), a small carnivore resembling a raccoon, has expanded into southern Idaho. The study offers the strongest evidence yet that the species, previously classified as an occasional visitor, has established a presence in the region.
Using camera traps in the Sawtooth National Forest, the team recorded nine detections at six different sites in early 2023. The sightings occurred in the Rock Creek canyon system, confirming that multiple animals inhabit the area.
Causes of the expansion
Scientists suggested that the growth of juniper woodlands in the state has created ideal shelter and feeding conditions for the species.
While the presence has been confirmed, the researchers said future studies are needed to verify whether the animals are reproducing in the new territory. The discovery signals a significant shift in the geographic distribution of these mammals, traditionally found in desert climates.
