OpenAI has temporarily paused new user sign-ups for its premium $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan following a sharp surge in compute demand.
The restriction was introduced after rapid adoption of the company's new Astra model placed unexpected strain on its server infrastructure, according to Thibault Sottiaux, head of product directions at OpenAI.
Sottiaux said the Pro subscription tier generates the highest computing load of any plan offered by the company. OpenAI decided to limit only new sign-ups to the tier, while existing active subscriptions continue to operate normally without disruption.
Prospective customers can still register for other OpenAI subscription tiers, including the lower-cost Go and Plus options, or access the company's models directly through its application programming interface (API). OpenAI has not specified when sign-ups for the Pro plan will resume, nor has it disclosed how many new customers were joining the tier before the restriction was put in place.
Demand surge driven by Astra model
The increased infrastructure load follows the release of Astra, a new artificial intelligence model launched on September 3 that quickly gained popularity across multiple OpenAI subscription tiers. The model introduced expanded capabilities in complex reasoning, software programming, and automated computer control, which OpenAI cited as a primary driver of the record user demand.
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research and deployment company based in San Francisco, California. Its ChatGPT platform, launched in late 2022, provides conversational AI tools powered by large language models. The company offers multiple service tiers ranging from a free basic version to specialized paid plans tailored for general consumers, software engineers, researchers, and enterprise organizations.
High-tier subscriptions such as ChatGPT Pro are designed for power users who require high compute capacity, priority access during peak hours, and expanded output limits for complex tasks. Computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence services relies on vast arrays of specialized graphics processing units housed in data centres, where advanced tasks like multi-step reasoning and computer automation consume significantly more computing power than standard text generation.
Free updates and educational initiatives
Alongside the temporary limits on its top-tier plan, OpenAI has continued to update features across its wider product ecosystem. The company recently added task scheduling capabilities to the free version of ChatGPT, allowing non-paying users to automate basic routines within the platform.
In Ukraine, an educational technology hub was recently established in Kyiv to test artificial intelligence applications in school classrooms in partnership with OpenAI. The initiative aims to explore how automated learning tools and language models can assist teachers and students in primary and secondary education.
Managing server capacity has become an ongoing operational challenge for major artificial intelligence developers as model capabilities expand. OpenAI has not announced a specific date for when infrastructure capacity will allow new ChatGPT Pro subscriptions to reopen.
