Insta360 launches $600 Luna Pro camera with Leica lens

Insta360 has launched the Luna Pro, a compact 8K video camera built on a three-axis gimbal and featuring a one-inch sensor with a Leica Summicron lens, priced at $600.

The new camera is currently on sale in the United States in Cosmic Black and Stellar White color options. The device expands the manufacturer's product line alongside the existing Luna Ultra model, which features a dual-sensor camera setup.

Image processing on the unit is driven by a four-nanometre primary chip working alongside a separate dedicated processor. This hardware combination enables 8K video capture with Dolby Vision high dynamic range technology, as well as slow-motion recording in 1080p resolution at up to 240 frames per second.

The device provides a two-times optical zoom without loss of image quality, as well as a HighRes Zoom function offering up to four-times magnification. For professional video editing, the camera supports 10-bit recording using Insta360's I-Log format as well as the ACES color standard.

Hardware specs and battery performance

For framing and control, the Luna Pro features a detachable two-inch OLED display screen. Storage is provided through 47 gigabytes of built-in internal memory. According to the manufacturer, a single battery charge provides a maximum operating time of up to four hours of continuous operation.

A one-inch sensor format provides a significantly larger surface area than standard smartphone image sensors, allowing more light to reach the pixels. This larger optical size improves dynamic range and reduces noise in low-light environments. Leica Summicron optics, engineered by German optics maker Leica Camera AG, are widely recognized for delivering high resolution and natural color accuracy.

The integrated three-axis gimbal utilizes motorized stabilization across pitch, roll, and yaw axes to smooth out camera movement during handheld filming. The inclusion of a detachable OLED screen allows videographers to view deep black levels and high contrast while reviewing footage or configuring settings in bright outdoor conditions.

Professional color workflows and software standards

High-end video workflows rely on log profiles and expanded bit depth to preserve image data for post-production color grading. Standard 8-bit video records 16.7 million distinct colors, whereas 10-bit video records over one billion colors, preventing color banding in gradients. The Academy Color Encoding System, developed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, creates an open color management standard for mixing camera footage across different editing platforms, while Dolby Vision dynamically adjusts HDR metadata scene by scene.

Market competition and previous product releases

The launch comes amid active product rollouts in the compact camera sector. Insta360 previously released a limited-edition Hello Kitty version of its compact Go Ultra camera in May 2026. Meanwhile, rival action camera manufacturer GoPro introduced its Mission 1 series, which features a 50-megapixel sensor and 8K video recording capabilities.

Insta360, founded in 2015, specializes in 360-degree cameras, action hardware, and handheld stabilization systems. Its main market competitor, California-based GoPro, pioneered the portable action camera category. Both companies have expanded into high-resolution 8K recording devices to cater to content creators and professional videographers seeking cinema-grade features in portable form factors.
