Only three out of 12 teams completed a real-world firefighting trial featuring humanoid robots at the World Humanoid Robot Games.
Organizers set the trial on the grounds of an active fire station rather than inside a controlled indoor arena. Participating machines were forced to navigate live outdoor conditions, including rain, changing light, and physical obstacles.
The challenge required each robot to locate a hazardous substance, turn off three separate valves, and extinguish a real flame using a fire extinguisher. Teams were allowed a maximum of 30 minutes to complete the full sequence of tasks.
Out of 12 participating entries, only three teams managed to complete every stage of the course. The Chinese newspaper Global Times reported that most failures resulted from problems with computer vision systems and a lack of movement precision.
Vision and Motion Failures
Adverse weather conditions and complex outdoor surroundings caused multiple robots to lose their orientation. As a result, several machines were unable to align themselves accurately or execute the precise physical actions needed to operate the fire station valves.
Even machines that successfully finished the challenge within the designated timeframe encountered operational difficulties. The UniX AI robot completed the test within the 30-minute limit, but worked noticeably slower than a human firefighter performing the same tasks.
Humanoid robots are machines designed with body structures resembling humans, featuring legs, arms, and hands that allow them to operate in environments built for people. Computer vision systems rely on optical cameras and software algorithms to map surroundings and identify physical objects. In chaotic settings like active fires, shifts in natural lighting and falling rain can distort camera data and disrupt automated navigation.
Testing and Commercial Deployment
Despite the high failure rate, organizers viewed the trial as a practical benchmark to identify structural and software weaknesses in humanoid machines. Participating engineering teams plan to use data gathered during the event to improve navigation, object recognition, motion coordination, and overall robot stability in real-world environments.
The firefighting challenge highlights growing efforts across the technology sector to demonstrate practical humanoid capabilities. In June 2026, Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi showcased a humanoid robot taking a photo with a Xiaomi 17T Pro smartphone during an official company announcement event.
Commercial deployment is also expanding into consumer markets. Chinese robotics company Unitree is preparing to launch its Unitree R1 humanoid robot on the international market at a retail price of $4,000.
