High fat and cholesterol intake does not increase the risk of developing pancreatic cancer, according to a meta-analysis of 25 studies published in Nutrients.

Researchers separately analyzed eight long-term cohort studies and 17 studies comparing the diets of patients already diagnosed with pancreatic cancer against healthy participants. In the more reliable long-term observations, scientists found no connection between total dietary fat or cholesterol levels and the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
In contrast, studies that assessed dietary habits after a cancer diagnosis showed a different pattern. Those retrospective studies linked high cholesterol intake with an estimated 63 percent increase in pancreatic cancer risk. Within that group of studies, every additional 100 milligrams of cholesterol consumed daily was associated with a 13 percent increase in risk.
However, the study authors emphasized that research relying on dietary reports gathered after a diagnosis depends heavily on participant memory. Because memory errors can distort results, scientists consider long-term prospective tracking to be significantly more dependable.
Dietary fat types and risk factors
Across both study types, researchers found no significant connection between total dietary fat consumption and pancreatic cancer. The authors stressed that existing data is insufficient to recommend cutting back on fat or cholesterol specifically to prevent pancreatic cancer.
The researchers noted that the specific type of fat consumed may be more important than total quantity. Unsaturated fats are found in fish, nuts and vegetable oils, while saturated fats occur in fatty meat and butter. Trans fats are present in certain types of industrial baked goods and fast food.
