Coffee linked to protection against age-related muscle loss

Drinking coffee may help protect against age-related muscle loss and physical frailty by boosting cellular energy production and reducing tissue inflammation, according to a scientific review published in the journal Food & Function.

Researchers reached their conclusions after analyzing findings from 54 separate studies that investigated how active biological compounds in coffee interact with skeletal muscle tissue.

The comprehensive review examined data gathered from laboratory experiments, animal models, and observational trials involving human participants. Scientists focused primarily on the metabolic effects of caffeine, polyphenols, trigonelline, and other biologically active substances found in coffee beans.

Mitochondrial function and energy production

Most of the preclinical research reviewed indicated that active compounds in coffee can improve the performance of mitochondria, the cellular structures that serve as energy stations for body tissues.

Mitochondria are specialized organelles found inside human and animal cells that generate adenosine triphosphate, the primary chemical fuel required for muscle contraction and physical exertion. In addition to enhancing mitochondrial efficiency, compounds in coffee were found to reduce systemic inflammation and oxidative stress while supporting healthy glucose and fat metabolism within muscle cells.

Authors of the review noted that all of these cellular processes are essential for maintaining muscle strength and endurance over time.

Impact on sarcopenia and frailty syndrome

Observational studies involving human subjects further suggested that regular coffee drinkers face a lower risk of developing sarcopenia, the progressive loss of muscle mass and strength associated with aging, as well as senile frailty syndrome.

Sarcopenia is a common health condition among older adults that gradually degrades muscular function, increasing the risk of mobility loss, physical disability, and falls. Frailty syndrome is a related clinical state characterized by declining physiological reserve, reduced strength, and vulnerability to health complications in late life.

However, researchers emphasized that convincing scientific evidence proving a direct causal link between coffee consumption and muscle growth or improved physical function in humans has not yet been established.

Bioactive compounds and publication context

Coffee is a complex beverage containing hundreds of chemical compounds in addition to caffeine. Polyphenols are naturally occurring plant antioxidants known to neutralize damaging free radicals in tissues, while trigonelline is a plant alkaloid that contributes to coffee's distinct aroma and plays a role in regulating cellular metabolism.
