Walking briskly can lower the risk of premature death even among individuals who record relatively low daily step counts, according to research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Researchers found that people who walked fewer than 5,000 steps a day but maintained a pace of at least 80 steps per minute experienced a mortality risk comparable to those who walked between 5,000 and 7,500 steps at a slower speed.

The study analyzed data from more than 100,000 middle-aged and older participants over an extended monitoring period. Every participant wore an activity tracker for seven days to record their daily step counts and movement speed.

Health outcomes for the group were subsequently monitored for about eight years. During the follow-up period, 1,697 participants died from various causes, including 502 deaths attributed to cardiovascular diseases.

Tracking step counts and movement speed

The study demonstrated that walking pace can partially offset a smaller overall volume of daily movement. Spending at least 30 minutes a day walking at a brisk pace proved particularly beneficial for long-term health outcomes.

While faster walking offered clear health benefits at lower step counts, the lowest overall risk of premature death occurred among individuals who completed between 7,500 and 10,000 steps daily.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine is a peer-reviewed medical publication that focuses on exercise science, sports medicine, and physical health. Fitness tracking technology, such as wrist-worn devices and accelerometers, allows researchers to measure cadence alongside overall daily step counts.

Cadence refers to the number of steps taken per minute, offering a direct measurement of walking intensity. In health research, tracking both step volume and speed helps scientists determine how different patterns of physical activity influence long-term mortality.

Health benefits of higher walking intensity

Cardiovascular diseases, which affect the heart and blood vessels, remain major causes of illness and mortality worldwide. Public health guidance has traditionally emphasized total daily step goals, but recent exercise research increasingly examines how movement intensity affects health outcomes.

The authors of the study concluded that walking speed is just as important for overall health as the total number of steps taken each day. They emphasized that this finding is particularly relevant for individuals who find it difficult to walk long distances.

Exercise guidance and physical activity targets

For individuals with limited mobility or tight schedules, increasing movement intensity can provide meaningful health protection without requiring high step totals. Taking quicker steps allows individuals to gain protective health benefits while walking shorter distances.

Global health recommendations have long encouraged regular physical activity to support heart health and maintain cardiorespiratory fitness as people age. Traditional health advice often promoted a target of 10,000 steps per day, though recent scientific studies have aimed to identify more flexible targets based on individual capability.

Using electronic activity trackers in large population studies allows researchers to collect precise movement data. Unlike self-reported activity surveys, wearable devices capture exact step counts and movement velocity throughout the day, providing clearer insights into how daily habits influence long-term mortality risks.
