A smartphone battery's actual capacity matters more than the number of charge cycles it has gone through, according to tech outlet BGR.
BGR specialists said a phone battery has two key measurements: its actual state, meaning capacity, and the number of full recharge cycles it has completed. The outlet's journalists said capacity is the more important of the two, since it shows the battery's overall condition compared with when it was new.
BGR recommended replacing the battery once its capacity drops below 80 percent, saying that at that point it starts approaching its death.
Link between capacity and charge cycles
The journalists said there is a certain connection between battery condition and cycle count. Capacity typically falls below 80 percent after the battery reaches 300 to 500 cycles. However, they said how the phone is actually used matters more than the cycle count itself. A relatively new battery will wear out faster if it is frequently exposed to heat or fully discharged.
BGR journalists previously said that phones being stored for long periods should be charged to 50 percent, switched off, and kept in a cool, dry place.
