Arthur Lira, the former Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and candidate for the Senate in Alagoas, met senator and presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro at an evangelical church service in Maceió on Tuesday, August 25, following a day of separate campaign events.
Lira, who belongs to the Progressive Party, was absent earlier in the day from major campaign activities in the capital of Alagoas led by Bolsonaro, the Liberal Party candidate for President of the Republic and son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. The missed events included a motorcade through the streets of Maceió and a gathering at the city commercial association.
Former Maceió Mayor JHC, a candidate for state governor representing the Brazilian Social Democracy Party, also did not join Bolsonaro during Tuesday campaign agendas. Despite his absence, Bolsonaro reaffirmed his political support for JHC in the gubernatorial race.
Federal deputy Alfredo Gaspar, the vice-presidential candidate on Bolsonaro's ticket, served as the principal host for the tour, which formed Bolsonaro's presidential campaign debut in the Northeast region. Gaspar greeted Bolsonaro at the airport, led the motorcade, and guided meetings throughout Maceió, a visit arranged as a political strategy because the city is Gaspar's home base.
Public Safety and Economic Proposals
Public safety stood out as a prominent theme in speeches throughout the day, reflecting one of Gaspar's main legislative priorities. Speaking to business figures at the commercial association, Bolsonaro referred to members of organized crime as narcoterrorists and advocated chemical castration for rapists, stating that he would take a radical approach to law enforcement.
Bolsonaro also launched criticisms against the socioeconomic record of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers' Party. However, he promised that he would not eliminate social welfare programs if elected to the presidency, asserting that Bolsa Família could not remain the last measure the government provides for citizens in need, but had to be the first.
Emphasizing the strategic importance of the region, Bolsonaro declared that Brazil would only achieve greatness when the Northeast region became great. He added that the leadership of Gaspar would play a key role in any future administration.
Campaign Strategy and Upcoming Tour
During his time in Maceió, Bolsonaro set aside hours to record promotional videos for the campaigns of local political allies. Sources indicated that neither Lira nor JHC was scheduled to participate in the recordings. Behind the scenes, individuals close to Bolsonaro explained that the visit to Alagoas was not intended to focus on joint appearances with Lira or JHC, but rather on highlighting Bolsonaro's partnership with Gaspar.
The brief meeting between Lira and Bolsonaro took place late Tuesday evening during a celebration marking the 111th anniversary of the Assembly of God church in Alagoas. The evangelical denomination holds significant social and political influence across the northeastern state.
The presidential campaign tour across Alagoas continues on Wednesday, August 26. Bolsonaro and Gaspar are scheduled to travel to Arapiraca in the interior of the state, where they will lead a motorcycle rally and meet with representatives from the local business and productive sectors.
