President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday (11) that Ukraine is very close to reaching a goal to join NATO – the Western military alliance – despite the bloc not offering a political invitation to a summit in Washington.
“We are very close to our goal,” he told a joint news conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in Washington.
He added that the next step would be an invitation, followed by eventual membership.
Ukraine calls for end to gun restrictions
Zelensky also said allies must lift all restrictions on Kiev’s long-range strikes on targets inside Russia if they want Ukraine to win the war.
The Ukrainian leader noted during the interview that he hopes allies will make a decision to allow such attacks.
“If we want to win, to prevail… we need to suspend all limitations,” he commented.
