The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said this Wednesday (24) that the US Senate's approval of a multibillion-dollar aid package for Ukraine reinforces the US role as a “beacon of democracy”.
“I am grateful to the US Senate for approving vital aid to Ukraine,” Zelensky said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.
“This vote reinforces America’s role as a beacon of democracy and leader of the free world.”
A broad foreign aid package was approved by the US Senate on Tuesday night (23), after months of delay, opening the way for new financing for Ukraine, which is suffering from advances by the Russian Army and a shortage of military supplies in Kiev.
The measure had 79 votes in favor and 18 against and brings together four bills approved by the Chamber of Deputies on Saturday (20), after the Republican leaders of the Chamber allowed the vote on US$95 billion (R$487 billion) in aid mainly military to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and US partners in the Indo-Pacific.
The four bills were combined into a package in the Senate, which now goes to Joe Biden for approval. The president has already stated that he will sign the approval of the package.
The largest project provides US$61 billion (R$313 billion) in financing for Ukraine; a second provides US$26 billion (R$133 billion) to Israel and humanitarian aid to civilians in conflict zones around the world; and a third allocates US$8.12 billion (R$41.6 billion) to “combat communist China” in the Indo-Pacific.
