Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about the second night of Russian attacks on the port region of Odesa and said that 60,000 tons of agricultural products, which were supposed to be sent to China, were stored in the affected area.
“This attack proves that their target is not just Ukraine and not just the lives of our people. About a million tons of food are stored in the ports that were attacked today. This is the volume that should have been delivered to consumer countries in Africa and Asia a long time ago,” he said.
“Throughout the day, maximum attention was paid to mitigating the consequences of the attack by Russian terrorists on Odesa, on communities in the region, on Chornomorsk, on our ports,” Zelensky said in his daily speech on Wednesday. “This was perhaps Russia’s greatest attempt to inflict pain on Odesa in the entire war period. Thanks to air defense and all our sky defenders, the fallout from this attack is still less than it could have been.”
“With each attack, we repeatedly appeal to our partners: Ukraine’s sky shield needs to be strengthened,” he added.
Zelensky linked the attacks to Russia’s decision to suspend the UN-brokered Black Sea grain initiative, which allowed Ukraine to export its grain. Kiev had signaled that it would like the United Nations and Turkey, also involved in negotiating the deal, to continue overseeing its implementation, despite Russia’s refusal.
“Everyone is affected by this Russian terror,” he added.
He said his government was preparing for the Crimean Platform summit, which he said would bring the region, which Russia illegally annexed in 2014, closer to being returned to Ukraine.
“We are sure that the summit will be meaningful and Crimea will be even closer to returning to the free world, even closer to liberation from occupation,” he said. “All Ukrainian land and all Ukrainian people must be free.”
