French President Emmanuel Macron, in a post on X, today described the death yesterday of two French workers in a humanitarian organization as a “cowardly and unacceptable act” Ukraine from a Russian drone strike and expressed his support for all the volunteers who have come to the aid of other countries.
The French Foreign Ministry confirmed today, Friday (2/2), as reported by the Athens News Agency, citing AFP, that two French volunteers with a humanitarian organization were killed and three others injured by a Russian drone strike in the Kherson region of southern Ukraine, according to a post made earlier today on the X platform by the head of French diplomacy, Stéphane Cezournet, in which he denounces “Russian brutality”.
“My thoughts are with their loved ones and their injured colleagues. I am in solidarity with all the volunteers who are committed to helping the populations”the French president wrote to X.
For his part, the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky paid tribute today to the memory of the two “brave” French, members of a humanitarian organization, who were killed in Ukraine, expressed his condolences and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“Courageous French people, members of a humanitarian organization, helped people and we will always be grateful for their humanity,” he wrote on social media, pointing out that “Russian terrorism” knows no borders or the “nationality of the victims.”
“Two French volunteers in a humanitarian organization paid with their lives for their commitment to the Ukrainians. Three were injured,” the French foreign minister wrote earlier a day after two French volunteers were killed in Russian shelling in the Berislav community near Kherson in southern Ukraine.
“Russia should be held accountable for its crimes,” added the minister in his post, which did not specify which organization the victims worked for.
The governor of Kherson, Oleksandr Prokudin, announced their deaths last night on Telegram, while Ukrainian police, for their part, announced the launch of an investigation into violations of the rules of war.
Berislav, which had about 12,000 inhabitants before the war, is located on the north bank of the Dnieper River, close to the front line. On January 27, one person was killed there by a Russian drone strike.
