Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today called on German Chancellor Olaf Solz to take a “strong step” and visit Kyiv on May 9, the day Russia commemorates the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II.
Speaking through a translator at the British think tank Chatham House, Zelensky unleashed hatred against Russia, especially in connection with the situation in Mariupol, where Kyiv says civilians are still hiding in the dilapidated Azofstal steel plant.
The Ukrainian president made the invitation to Soltz following tensions between the two countries when the German president was refused a visit to Kyiv last month.
“He is invited, the invitation is open, it has been done for a long time,” Zelenski said via video.
“He has been invited to come to Ukraine, he can take this very powerful political step to come here on May 9, in Kyiv. I do not explain the importance, I think you are cultured to understand why.”
Victory Day on May 9 is one of Russia’s most important national anniversaries – a commemoration of Soviet sacrifice for the defeat of Nazi Germany in what Russia calls the Great Patriotic War.
In Mariupol, the Ukrainian president stressed that the situation there amounted to “torture” and that no talks could take place with Russia if these civilians or troops were killed when they could have been released.
