Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday (28) that if US President Joe Biden misses the peace summit organized by Kiev, which will be held in Switzerland next month, Russian President Vladimir Putin would applaud its absence.
Ukraine hopes to bring together as many countries as possible in an attempt to unite views on how to wage war and increase pressure on Russia, which has seized almost a fifth of Ukraine's territory. Washington has signaled support but has not said whether Biden will attend.
“I know that the US supports the summit, but we don't know at what level,” said the Ukrainian president in Brussels on Tuesday at a joint press conference with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.
“(The) peace summit needs President Biden and also the other leaders looking at the United States’ reaction. Putin will only applaud his absence – and standing up, at that.”
Zelensky on Sunday urged Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, a close ally of Putin and one of the main beneficiaries of his feud with the West, to attend the summit. Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, said it sees no point in the conference.
