European politicians’ statements that Ukraine can not yet apply for EU candidate status are miserable for Kyiv, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was quoted as saying by pro-government Ria Novosti news agency.
Earlier, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said that almost all major EU member states are against granting Ukraine the status of a candidate country for EU membership, the report notes.
“All this is very insidious towards Ukraine. Why is all this insidious towards Ukraine? They promise Ukraine to join their ranks every year. Every year they say that” now you are half a step closer, half a centimeter closer, a millimeter closer to your favorite goal, “in this European integration,” Zakharova told Radio Sputnik.
“Where were those same politicians who are now convincing Ukrainians that they are not yet ready to accept them and that Ukraine is not ready to join, where were they then with the same statements?” stressed Zakharova.
According to Zakharova, Draghi essentially expressed in 2022 what former Ukrainian President Yanukovych almost lost his life in 2014. But the Western reaction to Rome’s statements is expected to be more cynical, he added.
