understand the case

A CNN Thais’ boyfriend, Matheus Lopes de Oliveira, said that the two were at home having lunch with the family when the companion would have smelled a goat pepper and started to feel sick.

According to the report, Thais, who is asthmatic, had shortness of breath and had to be rushed to the hospital. Arriving at the scene, the woman had to be revived by doctors.

A CNN heard specialists to understand what could have caused the severe allergic reaction in the young woman.

In the opinion of the neurosurgeon and professor at the Hospital das Clínicas in São Paulo Fernando Gomes the trancista may have been the victim of a cross-reaction – when there is an immune response to different products, but with similar components.

The neurosurgeon also points to the possibility that an unidentified element may have caused anaphylactic shock, the most severe form of allergic response a person can experience.

“The young woman’s asthma history already shows that she has a predisposition to inflammatory, autoimmune and even immunoallergic processes, which can configure an additional risk factor in this situation”, he mentions.

The allergist and immunologist at Albert Einstein Hospital Brianna Nicolletti points out that allergy to pepper is rare, but it can happen, as well as to other spices, such as nutmeg, cinnamon, among others.

“It is worth remembering that allergies can happen at any time in life, when there is a ‘deregulation’ of the immune system from understanding what would be normal and strange”, explains Nicolletti.

“You can develop an allergy at any age, even if you’ve already ingested [uma determinada substância] and not having had any allergies, as the immune system is constantly changing”, he adds.

How to spot a severe allergic reaction

In the case of severe allergic reactions, the doctor indicates that the signs and symptoms appear minutes or a few hours after contact with the substance. You need to pay attention to:

  • Redness, itching or bumps on the skin;
  • Cough, wheezing or shortness of breath;
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea or vomiting;
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure) and;
  • Fainting or drowsiness.

What to do in cases of severe allergic reaction

Both experts consulted by the CNN are categorical in stating that the first step in identifying a severe allergic reaction is to seek specialist help at the nearest hospital .

This is because an anaphylactic shock can cause a glottis edema, which can affect the throat and obstruct the flow of air to the lungs. If not treated quickly, the condition can be fatal.

However, the doctors interviewed reiterate that people with a predisposition to severe allergic reactions often carry an injectable adrenaline pen with them, which must be applied when necessary.

In addition, keeping the person preferably lying down, with their legs elevated, to facilitate blood circulation and observing their vital signs are essential measures.
