Xi talks about China's economic consolidation and reunification with Taiwan in 2024

In a New Year's speech this Sunday (31), Chinese President Xi Jingping said that China will consolidate and reinforce the country's economic recovery in 2024.

The leader also defended that the country would be reunified in 2024, in a nod to Taiwan.

“China will certainly be reunited, and all Chinese on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be bound by a common sense of purpose and share the glory of the Chinese nation's rejuvenation,” Xi said.

To advance Chinese modernization and deepen reforms, Xi advocated the greater integration of Hong Kong and Macau into China, with the central government's continued support for the autonomous territories.

After a year of economic difficulties marked by the housing market crisis, local government debt, weak demand and widespread youth unemployment, Chinese authorities have promised that the government will intensify efforts to sustain the recovery in 2024.

Xi reinforced this commitment in his speech, saying that the country will support the recovery with deeper reforms.

“[A China] will consolidate and reinforce the positive trend of economic recovery and achieve stable and long-term economic development,” said the Chinese leader, adding that development would be carried out in a well-coordinated manner with quality, economic balance and security.

“We need to comprehensively deepen reform and opening-up, further enhance confidence in development, strengthen economic vitality, and make greater efforts to promote education, science and technology, and cultivate talents.”

Xi concluded the speech by saying that China would maintain a pacifist and cooperative stance in 2024 to deal with conflicts occurring around the world, with the aim of achieving a “better world”.

“At this very moment, when lights illuminate the night sky, we all wish prosperity to our great country and we all wish peace and tranquility to the world.”
