Chinese President Xi Jinping told Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation today that all sides should work to resolve the crisis in Ukraine “responsibly,” according to China’s state-run CCTV network.
China has refused to condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine or call them an ‘invasion’ and is calling for a negotiated solution.
In a telephone conversation, Xi reiterated China’s willingness to help resolve the situation.
China and Russia have become increasingly close in recent years, and in February Putin and Xi signed a broad strategic alliance to counter US influence and said they would not have “forbidden” areas of cooperation.
On Friday, Russia and China opened a new cross-border bridge in the Far East, which they hope will further boost trade as Moscow suffers from sweeping Western sanctions over its actions in Ukraine.
