Xbox director speaks out on metaverses and Play-to-Earn games

Microsoft Xbox Head of Gaming Division Phil Spencer expressed interest in the metaverse, but expressed reservations about games based on the Play-to-Earn model due to NFT speculation.

In a conversation with Bloomberg, Phil Spencer (Phil Spencer) spoke about his attitude towards the metaverse. He claims that gamers have been in the metaverse for about 30 years. Each game has its own 3D world where people can interact and have a gaming experience, whether it’s World of Warcraft, Roblox or regular racing.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all that many gamers don’t understand how the metaverse differs from games. In ordinary games, each person also has an avatar, he can walk in the general game space, turn on his voice and interact with other participants from anywhere, ”said Spencer.

At the beginning of the year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that the metaverse helps to connect the computer and the real world. Spencer confirmed that the commercial use of the metaverse continues to be of interest to Microsoft as of late.

The head of Xbox noted that he remains wary of games that work on the principle of “play and earn” (Play-to-Earn, P2E) due to speculation in the NFT market. However, he acknowledged that game monetization has been around for many years, so P2E-based games still have interesting uses.

This point of view is not shared by all cryptocurrency enthusiasts. For example, American billionaire Mark Cuban said that buying real estate in the metaverses is a very stupid idea.
