Writer and political scientist Jorge Caldeira is elected to the ABL chair

The Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) elected, this Thursday (7), the writer and doctor in Political Science Jorge Caldeira, who received 29 votes. Caldeira will occupy chair 16, which belonged to the writer Lygia Fagundes Telles, who died in April this year.

33 academics participated in the election, who voted in person or by letter. The previous occupants of chair 16 were: the literary critic Araripe Júnior (founder) – who chose
as patron the poet Gregório de Matos – in addition to Félix Pacheco and Pedro Calmon.

Jorge Caldeira is a writer and social scientist with a master’s degree in sociology and a doctorate in political science from USP, ABL highlights that he is recognized for his innovative accounts of the country.

Author of the bestseller “History of wealth in Brazil”, he is also known for presenting the colonial era in an innovative way, with a different vision than the official one.

“He published ‘Mauá: entrepreneur of the Empire’ and, throughout his 20 works, he has been recovering characters
forgotten to retell Brazilian history, sometimes contradicting official historiography and offering a new vision of the colonial era in the country”, highlights the Academy.

Caldeira also wrote books about Diogo Antônio Feijó, José Bonifácio, Noel Rosa, Ronaldo, Guilherme Pompeo, Júlio Mesquita and other characters mentioned in works such as “Brasil – A História
told by those who saw it”, ”101 Brazilians who made history” and “History of Brazil with
entrepreneurs”.

“He has also worked on several fronts of the publishing market, as publisher of Bravo! magazine, consultant for the Brasil 500 years project, by Rede Globo, and editor of Exame and Isto É magazines, and Folha de S. Paulo newspaper”, added ABL. .
