The US Coast Guard will conduct a verification process to determine whether a debris field found in the search area for the missing Titan submersible is related to the vessel. Maximilian Cremer, director of the Ocean Technology Group at the University of Hawaii Marine Center, shared details with the CNN .
The Coast Guard announced on Thursday that a debris field was found using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), but it remains unclear whether it is connected in any way to the missing submersible.
“I wouldn’t be surprised to find a debris field near the wreckage of the Titanic,” Cremer told the CNN .
“I would have to see what it really is,” he continued, adding that he is not sure whether the search engine transmits video.
The expert was asked if he believes this means anything the US Coast Guard – who are also clearly aware of the types of debris normally found on the ocean floor – made a point of sharing the news about the field.
“That could tell me that someone saw something inside the wreckage that they have, I think, on camera or sonar, which allows them to assume that it might not be the Titanic, but the stricken vessel,” Cremer said.
“I’m sure they are now going through a verification process to see if it is indeed associated with the submersible hit,” he added.
Submarine oxygen supply
The submarine is believed to be reaching the limits of its typical 96 hours of life support, having disappeared on Sunday morning (18).
Experts interviewed by CNN they said crew members would realize that staying calm and conserving energy would be critical if they were awaiting rescue.
If there was a problem with the submarine, “whatever the fault may be,” it’s fair to assume that “you would have some agitation and some panic for a brief period of time,” Cremer said.
But, he continued, a “strong leader” on board would likely insist that everyone go into “a kind of hibernation state and use as little oxygen as possible.”
