Apple would be working on another subscription service. But not for some new content platform to be combined with Fitness + or Tv +, rather a periodic payment to rent your devices. In other words, for rent an iPhone or Mac for a certain period, only to then return it or – who knows – maybe redeem it as is done with car leasing. Everything is still in the works and it has been talking about it Bloomberg who cited the usual sources informed about the facts. It would be a curious step that, on the other hand, would intervene in a sector that is certainly not unprecedented: it is in fact already possible to rent an iPhone or another smartphone using the most diverse platforms, even if above all for those who have a company or in any case a VAT number. However, doing it directly from the parent company would give users more security, services and assistance and would point precisely to individuals, given that Apple already has services for the business world.
The Cupertino project would still be in the development phase and second Bloomberg, “Would represent a profound change of strategy for a group that has always sold devices at full price, if anything through agreements with telephone operators”. It could help Apple to generate even more revenues and expand the ecosystem of the Apple even towards that slice of users not willing to shell out hundreds or thousands of dollars for each new model and yet attracted by the services and devices of the giant led by Tim Cook. In conclusion, iPhone it is still the number one source of revenue for the company: last year it produced something like $ 192 billion, more than half of the turnover.
If obviously no one has officially commented yet (and it will hardly happen), the idea would seem to make the purchase of a phone even lighter, pushing on use rather than ownership. Also because buying it in installments has obviously always been possible. Again, a bit like what happens in the automotive sector with perhaps high-level car sharing, such as the Lynk & Co model. The iPhone would be rented using the same Apple ID and the same App Store account set in the past, perhaps including one of the Apple One service subscription plans. But, in fact, it would not be a purchase in installments: based on the chosen device, just like for iCloud or Apple Music, you would pay a monthly subscription, with the possibility of switching to the new model once it is launched. Which, at least for iPhones, happens every year in September and October. The project could start within the year, postpone to 2023 or – this is never to be excluded – be canceled.
All in all, rent an iPhone or other high-end smartphone it’s not that complex. Various platforms, more or less known and in some cases also active in the world of refurbished smartphones, offer various types of plans. Trendevice, for example, offers an iPhone 12 Pro from 26.90 euros per month, a 2019 MacBook Air Retina at 29.90 and an iPhone SE 2020 (not the latest model) for just 9.90 euros. VAT numbers can deduct 100% of the cost but the offer is also open to individuals and is in fact the only large platform active in the sector outside the company context. Caution: the rental obviously concerns refurbished devices but in perfect condition. Apple itself, as mentioned above, offers rental or leasing business solutions with maturities of 24 months or flexible.
Rent2Business It is aimed only at companies and VAT numbers and offers for example an iPhone 11 from 64 GB at 23.55 euros but also PCs, printers, TVs, monitors, projectors and other devices. A Lenovo 100E N3350 4GB 32GB notebook costs just over 6 euros per month. Also Flexit Rent or Apple’s network of authorized resellers R-Store they offer a large hi-tech catalog only to companies (in this case we speak, more precisely, of operational rental). There are indeed dozens of such intermediaries, and the prices seem quite chaotic, in the sense that by digging deep it is possible to find good deals. To return to private individuals, therefore, for those who do not have a VAT number, it is often necessary to contact exercises or shops present mainly in large cities on which of course it is necessary to pay particular attention.
