THE World Voice Day It is celebrated on Wednesday (16) as part of the Voice Week Campaign, promoted by the Brazilian Academy of Laryngology and Voice (ABLV) and the Brazilian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervical-Facial Surgery (ABB-CCF). The initiative aims to raise awareness about the necessary care with vocal health to prevent serious illnesses such as larynx and head and neck cancer.
“Actions like these are important because Brazil has a high morality of laryngeal cancer. This is because, often, the patient arrives at the diagnosis in later phases. In Brazil, mortality reaches around 67%, while in the United States, for example, this rate is 31%,” says Adriana Hachiya, a member of ABVL ABVL and president, to CNN .
However, when diagnosed early, glotic tumors have a chance to cure greater than 90%, according to the expert.
Signs of alertness in the voice that may indicate health problems
Many voice -related symptoms, such as hoarseness and throat, may be associated with less serious health problems such as cold and flu, or even excessive use of vocal cords. However, when these symptoms persist for more than 15 days, it is necessary to seek medical consultation to investigate the cause, according to Hachiya.
“Voice failures and change in vocal quality mean, most of the time, some common problem, such as a cold picture,” explains the otolaryngologist. “In this type of inflammation, hoarseness passes most of the time. This is what we call self -limited condition. If the picture goes from a period of 15 days, that is, if it is happening persistently, the ideal is that the larynx will be examined to rule out more serious diseases,” he adds.
According to the expert, warning signs include:
- Hoarseness;
- Persistent clearing;
- Nodule in the throat;
- Constant sore throat;
- Change in vocal quality (as the stuffy voice);
- Difficulty swallowing.
According to Hachiya, these signs, when persistent, may be related to tumors in the laryngeal region, pharynx, throat, tongue, tonsils, head and neck.
“All these signs are signs of alert. Sometimes the patient does not come with a persistent hoarseness complaint, but sometimes he has a sore throat that can radiate to the ear, for example. This is a sign of laryngeal cancer or throat cancer, and early diagnosis involves less mutilating treatment, with less morbidity and a greater chance of healing,” he says.

Daily care, such as proper hydration, balanced diet and conscious use of voice, are fundamental to prevent injuries to vocal folds. They are:
- Constant hydration : Drinking water throughout the day helps keep lubricated vocal folds;
- Vocal abuse : Scream, speaking loudly for a long time or force the voice can cause injury;
- Do not smoke and moderate alcohol : Both are risk factors for laryngeal diseases;
- Care for food : Avoid foods that increase gastric reflux, which can affect the larynx. This is the case of caffeine and fatty foods.
