World Rock Day: a tour of the cities every fan should know

“I wanna rock’n’roll all night!”says the chorus of the group’s song kiss . A similar feeling occurs during this tour of the cities that forever marked the rock history, whether for being home to iconic bands or stars or the stage for some memorable event.

The script is a celebration of world rock day celebrated all July 13 since 1985, when bands like U2, The Who, Queen and names like Paul McCartneyMadonnaElton John , David Bowie and Mick Jagger among others, gathered at the historic festival live aid with the aim of raising funds to fight hunger in Ethiopia.

The shows, which took place at Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, were so grand and impactful that they went down in history.

Our celebration is, then, traveling! Let’s visit places that are part of the history of rhythm that revolutionized the world’s music scene:

Liverpool

It’s impossible to talk about rock and not mention the Beatles ! The quartet emerged in the 1960s and, along with them, the city that hosted them in the beginning: Liverpool.

Destiny brings together addresses that were immortalized in the band’s songs, such as the street Penny Lane the orphanage Strawberry Field or 20 Forthlin Road, near West Allerton Station, where Paul MacCartney was born! And of course the pub Cavern Club where it all began.

London

The English capital also has traces of Hurricane Beatles on its map. the iconic Abbey Road address that every tourist needs to know and take a picture of.

as well as the house of Freddy Mercury at Garden Lodge, Logan Place 1.

It is also from the city that some of the biggest rock bands in the world have plunged towards stardom: Led ZeppelinDavid BowieRolling StonesQueenPink Floyd and The Clash .

Manchester

On this list of rock cradle cities, the UK is a must-see! Another must-see for rockers is Manchester. The city brought to the world Joy Division , The Smiths and the Gallagher brothers, founders of Oasis .

Seattle

Another rock mother city that needs to be on the script is Seattle , nascent of grunge. Only from this city they left Pearl Jam , NirvanaAlice In ChainsThe U-MenSoundGarden and Jimi Hendrix among other exponents.

When in town, be sure to go to The Crocodile. Nirvana, Cheap Trick and MudHoney, among other bands, do not leave there.

Also, go to The Showbox, the venue where Pearl Jam kicked off her career; to the Museum of Pop Culture, the MoPOPa museum dedicated to pop culture and which includes, among many musical and cultural topics, subjects of absolute interest to rockers.

Among the permanent exhibitions there is one dedicated to Pearl Jam.

Chicago

The Smashing Pumpkins , Eddie Vedder , cheap trick , Muddy Waters , Patti Smith and Wilco were some of the names that were born in the city and, therefore, make it mandatory for fans.

New York

In addition to the multiple influences and gastronomic, cultural, social and ethnic fusions, New York has immense importance for the music scene, from jazz to punk rock. Kiss, Blondie, Velvet Undergrond, Ramones, Talking Heads and New York Dolls (among many other names and bands) received the spotlight and played their first guitar notes in the North American city.

In the 1960s and 70s, the stages and balconies of places like CBGB and Max’s Kansas City for example, were a meeting point for musicians, poets and artists who flirted with rock’n’roll.

Once in NY, of course you go to Central Park. There visit the Strawberry Fields Memorial where there is a mosaic in honor of John Lennon forming the word imagine. Neighborhoods like the East Village, Brooklyn, Williamsburg and Greenpoint have a wide variety of bars that play rock.

Memphis, United States

History tells and, many fans maintain, that rock was born here, in the union of blues and country.

Fact is that Memphis is the city of Elvis Presley and also of Sun Records a record label founded in 1952 that saw BB King, Elvis, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis sing and is still open to visitors today.

Brasilia

It is the federal capital, an open-air museum city, home to some of Brazil’s top rock bands.

Capital Inicial, Legião Urbana, Raimundos, Plebe Rude and more, made the destination the capital of Brazilian rock.

So much so that it created the Rock Route, initiative of the Department of Tourism (Setur-DF) in partnership with the União Pioneira de Integração Social (Upis) college and curated by Philippe Seabra, lead singer of Plebe Rude.

The idea is to offer residents and visitors a unique experience of getting to know Brasília through the eyes of this musical style enshrined in the city’s history.

Places like Colina – UNB O bar Cafofo (which with the emergence of the first bands started to be used for rehearsals and small shows in the basement) and the Radicals (considered the punk temple of Brasilia, it was inaugurated in 1984 and saw the cream of Brasiliense rock on its way to stardom pass through the small stage in its basement) make up the route.

Sao Paulo

The city houses the Rock Gallery , one of the places that most brings together stores dedicated to the world of rock. There are clothes, records, accessories, shoes, tattoos, piercings, buttons, dolls all with the rocker theme. Surely you can find your idol’s t-shirt over there!
